User Stories

A User Story is a description of a feature that the user wants to have. It is a way to communicate the feature to the team and to have a shared understanding of the feature. User Stories are written in the language of the user, so they are easy to understand by the user. Taking your time to write a good User Story is important, because it will be used to estimate the effort of the feature.

In Gitlab we use the 'Issue' feature to create User Stories. You can do this as follows:

  • Visit the Issues-page of your project.
  • Click on the 'New Issue' button.
  • Give the issue the title of the User Story.
    • For example: 'As a user, I want ..., so I ...'
  • Give the issue a description, which explains the User Story in more detail.
  • Add the Definition of Done to the issue which fits the User Story.
    • Use checkboxes to mark the Definition of Done.
  • Add the Acceptance Criteria to the issue which fits the User Story.
    • Use checkboxes to mark the Acceptance Criteria.
  • Create the Tasks for the User Story using the Child items feature.
